Property Brief: Hopewell Presbyterian Chapel – 79 West Broad St. (1877) – Summary
The First Presbyterian Church of the village of Hopewell grew out of a Sunday school that was
established in 1865. The Church was organized in 1877, and the Chapel building was erected in the same year. It was a wood structure in the Gothic style, with a seating capacity of three hundred.
In 1923, when the Church was relocated to the current building at 80 West Broad, the Chapel was
converted to a private residence. The building was turned 90 degrees, moved a short distance to the
northeast, and had porches added at each end.
