Property Brief: Hopewell Public School / G.A.R. Hall – 75 West Broad St. (1855) – Summary
The stuccoed stone building at 75 West Broad Street in Hopewell opened in 1856 as the local
public school, and was known as the Hopewell Academy. The school relocated in 1888 to the
Hopewell Grammar School on Model Avenue, and this building became the headquarters of the
local chapter of the Grand Army of the Republic (G. A. R.), a Civil War veterans organization. It
then was sold in 1918 and converted into a private residence.
