Property Brief: 18 Lafayette St., Hopewell Pete Hurley (1956)
Pete Hurley contracted polio in July 1952, and was paralyzed below his neck, losing the use of his arms and legs. He then spent a year in hospitals, including six months of treatment and training at the Warm Springs Foundation in Georgia. The community of Hopewell responded deeply, volunteering and raising money to support the family – wife Betty and three children – and then to build a house for them, including a store to sell cards and consignment goods. Pete also made paintings of local scenes using a mouth stick with an attached paintbrush.
