Hopewell History Brief: St. Michael’s Orphanage Cemetery (c. 1898 – 1973)
St. Michael’s Orphanage operated in Hopewell, N. J. from 1898 to 1973. The orphanage had cemetery located in a tree-lined lane set back from the south side of the orphanage building, where an estimated several hundred infants and children were buried. When the orphanage was closed and the building demolished in 1973, the childrenÂ’s remains were reinterred at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Trenton.
Several other people also were interred separately at St. Michael’s and removed to St. Mary’s. Bishop Michael J. O’Farrell, who initiated the creation of St. Michael’s, was reinterred at the Bishop’s Circle at St. Mary’s. A large Celtic cross that was on the front lawn at St. Michael’s also was removed to St. Mary’s, and has inscriptions for the children originally buried in the cemetery, for Col. Daniel E. Morris, a major benefactor, and for Rev. Neal McMenamin, a chaplain at St. Michael’s.
