Hopewell History Brief: St. Michael’s Orphanage (1898 – 1973)
Built in 1898 as St. Michael’s Orphan Asylum and Industrial School to provide support and education for abandoned and neglected children. Self-sufficient as a home, school, church, and farm. Expanded in the 1920s and 1930s to a capacity of 450 with wings on both sides and a gymnasium. No orphans from 1955, instead provided shorter-term housing for wards of the state, neglected and deprived children, 6 to 14 years, awaiting adoption or placement in foster homes, plus severely handicapped and profoundly retarded children, infant to 5 years. Demolished in 1973, and property preserved in 2010. Staffed and administered since its founding by the Sisters of Saint Francis of Glenn Riddle, Pa.
