Business Classes at Central High School, c. 1966

Hopewell Central High School [MPT]

These amazing photos from the second half of the 1960s show classrooms at Hopewell Central High School – providing a view of that time and place – the teachers and students, the classroom setup and equipment, and the information being taught.

These photos show two classrooms for business classes taught by Edith Kostron: a typing classroom with manual typewriters at each desk, and a bookkeeping classroom with a large collection of pull-down posters and other teaching materials.

The school district lauded the high school business program in a 1967 newsletter, as it provided practical skills for any student:

More positions await Business Education graduates than can possibly be filled, and the needs will be constantly increasing … Participation in the Business Education pattern of studies assures most of immediate employment upon completion of their high school years. So great has been the demand for trained office workers of Hopewell Valley Central High School that most classes have a record of one hundred percent job placement at graduation.
